LaTrece Davis :: Why Am I So Different?

By Minister LaTrece Davis

Growing I would always wonder “why am I so different?“ I could never fit into just one group. Yeah, sure I had friends from different groups in my classes throughout my school years, but I was just not able to fit in. I’ve had people (family, friends, classmates, and even strangers) call me “strange”, “different”, “weird”. I hated hearing those names and so I would fight as hard as I could because I didn’t want to stand out all by myself. That is until Jesus opened my eyes that, to stand out was how I was created to be. As long as I tried to fit in I would never be good enough. I would always be either too quiet or too talkative, too big or too small, too this or too that but never just right. If you take a look at the world around us, there is a big identity crisis. There are those who have no clue who they are or what they were put here for, all because of following the crowd. To feed on the devils lies of not being good enough, that is when insecurities and fears set in. Our identity shouldn’t come from the opinions of people but from the truth of what God says about us. Here are just a few things God says about you:

Genesis 1:26 You are created in God’s image and after His likeness.
Zechariah 2:8 You are the apple of God’s eye
Psalm 139:14 You are fearfully and wonderfully made
Song of Songs 4:7 You are all together beautiful and there is no flaw in you
Jeremiah 31:3 God loves you with an everlasting love.

You don’t have to be afraid when you trust in God’s love for you. And He does love you. He loves you so much! In fact He loves us just as much as He loves Jesus. Jesus calls us the SALT of the earth and the LIGHT of the world, but we can’t shine or bring flavor here to this earth without being different, without standing out! Comparing ourselves to others can be a dangerous thing. You will never live your Best or God’s best for you, or reach your full potential. If you compare how you sing to how another person sings well then you’ll feel like you can’t sing. Or if you compare how you write to how another person writes, that can make you feel as though your writing isn’t good enough.

To the Ladies: When we choose to fear (reverence and trust) God instead of man(people), that is what makes us virtuous. That is what makes our worth far above rubies. That is what makes us capable of doing and being all that is described in Proverbs 31:10-31. A virtuous woman is defined as a woman of high moral standards. And there is nothing higher than living by God’s standards for us!

“Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.” –Proverbs 31:29-31

To the men: There are promises for you as well when you choose to live in the fear of the Lord. Psalm 128 says that you are blessed when you fear the Lord. You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands. You’ll be happy and it will be well with you. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine in the innermost parts of your house; your children shall be like olive plants round about your table. You don’t have to be afraid to be different or stand out when you live in the fear of the Lord. Look at King David when he was preparing to go against Goliath. King Saul tried to put his armor on David, but it wouldn’t fit! Instead of trying to go out with it even though it didn’t fit him, David instead chose to go out fully armored in the name of the Lord.

Just like with the prophet Jeremiah, God knew all about you before He put you in your mother’s womb. He set you apart and ordained you for something special. You are so special to your Heavenly Father. So go on and let your light SHINE! Your physical features, your voice, your calling are what makes you YOU! You have been born and you are here on this earth for such a time as this! You and I don’t have to question any longer why we are so different, but now we can give thanks to God for our individual differences. YOU ROCK!!!
